Tuesday's Finds

..... to America the Beautiful, Happy Birthday!

Remember when times were easy and we could all go on parade!   I used to do this as a kid....   footloose and fancy-FREE!   (shabtown signs)

I need to find those old pics and pull them out of those OLD magnetic page albums.   Please, do that yourself.   And then place them in a photo-safe, acid and lignin- free photo box.   Protect those memories!

Carry your memories in a safe place.   I love this bucket!  (sweetlibertyprims)

Let YOUR freedom RING!  How beautiful and stunning to place some patriotic artwork in a central place in your home.  (tweetheartwallart)

Monday

The world has just lost an angel....   a dear friend of mine lost her father this weekend.   It was sudden and truly sad.   He was a beloved member of the community, volunteered almost every day at his church, and always went above and beyond with his family and love ones.  I wanted to post the picture of the above print as a word of hope to me but to others as well.    We love you, Mr. Lee!

Friday's Thoughts - The beach solves all problems

I think that I will move here.   Life just seems to melt away here!   Everyone is happy and sun-kissed and child-like.   This year was a true vacation to me - no thoughts, no worries, other than if we are going to run out of sunscreen..... wow, what stress.

It has taught me that you shouldn't sweat the small stuff, BUT to pay attention to the BIG stuff.   PAY ATTENTION TO:   what your kids are truly and innocently telling you, the world around you and enjoy it, the new people you meet and that the world is bigger than one's own neighborhood, and to the sand in your bathing suit!

Tuesday's (Fun) Find

Save some sand after a day at the beach
and create a lasting reminder of summer fun
using beach toys as candle molds.

Tools and Materials
Beeswax, 1 pound per candle
Candle dye
Candy thermometer
Scissors
Wooden spoon
Assorted molds with flat bottoms
Sand
Paintbrush
Wooden craft sticks
Large plastic container or bucket
Square-braided cotton wicking, number 4

Sand Candles How-To
1. Place beeswax in a double boiler over medium heat. Each 1-pound piece will yield a 4-inch-tall, 3-inch-wide pillar candle. Monitoring with a candy thermometer, heat beeswax to 175 degrees. For a heavier coat of sand, heat the wax to 190 degrees.

2. Add about 1/8 of a cake of dye per 1 pound of wax. Blend with a wooden spoon. To test the color, dip a wooden craft stick into the wax, and allow to dry. Add more dye in small pieces until you achieve desired color, remembering the finished color will be slightly darker than the stick.

3. Combine sand with water by mixing with your hands until sand packs firmly enough to hold an imprint. Cover bottom of container with several inches of sand. Set mold on top, and pack additional sand tightly around it, making sure mold stays upright. Grip mold firmly, and carefully ease it straight up and out of the sand. If the sand wall crumbles, mix in a little more water, and begin again.

4. Cut a piece of cotton wicking to several inches longer than the height of the candle, and dip it into the melted wax to stiffen it. Use a pencil to make a hole in the bottom of the mold. Place one end of the dry wick in the hole, and bury it, using the pencil.

5. Making sure the wick stands upright and centered, pour the wax into the mold in a slow, steady stream. Don't pour too fast, as the wax will make a dent in the sand. If you are making more then one candle, return the wax to the stove between pours. Let the candle set until completely cool (overnight, if possible), and remove it. Dust off excess sand with a paintbrush, and use scissors to cut off the excess wick and wax at the base.

Friday's Thoughts

I have been feverishly getting ready for our annual beach vacation....   running errands, emptying out the refrigerator (and this year, I even cleaned it!), dropping off last minute orders for www.keepingconnections.com, and of course, packing, packing, and re-packing.  On the agenda for today was trying to convince one of my 5 year old twins, that no, he cannot take an entire packing bin full of his stuffed animals!   Had to explain that if he did that would mean someone doesn't get clothes, bathing suits, and clean underwear!   Ok, we ARE going on a leisure vacation, but sheesh!

So, I believe that this is a good time to go.... I need some time to think about stuff.   To get reconnoitered, and to get centered again.   To GET in touch and KEEP in touch with and know my direction..... of course, do we ever REALLY know?????

Anyway, the beach provides tons, tons, tons of inspiration for me.   You don't need to go anywhere to get YOUR inspiration.... just find a place (real, imaginary, a place from childhood, or somewhere made up) and "take" yourself there.   See the sites... smells the aromas...  taste all the good things.... and don't forget to b-r-e-a-t-h-e.....

I know that I will......

PS - you may even want to journal about it, draw or paint a picture of it, or pull out pictures from it and place them in a scrapbook.....

A Few Thoughts about Father's Day

Just a few thoughts about "Father's Day"......contrary to popular belief, the designation did not originate to help greeting card companies sell more of their product; in fact, when "father's day" was first proposed, there were no Father's Day cards! Mrs. John Dodd, of my hometown of Spokane, Washington wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Mr. Smart was a Civil War veteran and was widowed when Mrs. Dodd's mother died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise all six children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington State (probably just outside of Spokane). After Mrs. Dodd became an adult she realized the selflessness and strength her father had shown in raising the children as a single parent while running the farm.
The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane and in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. It was in 1966 that the proclamation was signed declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day by President Lyndon Johnson.
Today many families honor not just their fathers and grandfathers but stepfathers, uncles and other adult males that have served as mentors.

Celebrate, honor and cherish your fathers on this special day - let them know in a special way how important they are to you. And remember; be creative in your celebration and gift
giving.....they may not need another tie!

Weekend - Ways to Keep in Touch

Oh my, I am a list person!!    My hubby, my friends and yes, even Grams from this site, all tease me about my lists!  I think that once you become a mother that your ability to remember ANYTHING decreases an the ability to make lists increases!   AND these are in direct proportion to the number of kids you have!

Anyway keeping in touch is hard on moms and others in general, so we really want to make sure that you are able to do it and do it EASILY!   So we offer ways - simple, creative, basic, fun, interesting, whatever - for you to keep in touch.

So back to my lists, here is one that I read on Lisa Mason's site in her article called How to Stay in Touch with the People you Care About.....

Create a list- Make lists of all the people you want to stay in contact with and then refer to your list when you are sending out emails, cards or letters.

Ok, are you screaming and running.....   I have to do this also.   In fact I list people that I want to contact or send a card to right in my calendar!
Also remember that we are here to help you with those card-making (and sending) needs!  Click here or ...   Just give us YOUR list!  :-)   Easy, peasy!

Friday's Thoughts

Hi everyone-

Be creative every day, I keep telling myself......  But, I did not step into my craft room today, instead I stepped into the bathroom!   Yes, the bathroom...  the Half Bath.    I striped wallpaper today.... yuck!  You know that old masculine striped paper - the one that kinda goes along with the Hunt Scene prints from the '80s.  Yeah, that paper.... it's almost gone.   I say almost because I had to stop for the night ....

So I got to thinking "How does this relate to my motto to Keep In Touch....."    And I thought that I need to "keep in touch" with myself too - to stay true to myself....    Ok, yes, I did have a lot of time to think about this....   I want this to be the beginning of turning my space into a space that I create.... not the previous owner and not my kids, but for me and my hubby.    Something that we will enjoy....  and will love and smile at every time I walk by.

Ok all this from a BATHROOM!   But yes, striping wallpaper IS therapeutic and can give you a sense of peace and gratification.

And my kids wondering why I was in there so long!   hehehe...
